Why Edmond
Edmond is a city located in Oklahoma County in Central Oklahoma, bordering the northern edge of Oklahoma City as part of its broader metropolitan area. Situated within the Sandstone Hills and Cross Timbers ecological regions, the area is characterized by rolling terrain populated by post oak and blackjack oak trees. The city covers nearly 88 square miles, including water bodies such as Twin Bridges Lake and Arcadia Lake. Located on Edmond's eastern side, Arcadia Lake serves as a local fishing destination populated with bluegill, largemouth bass, channel catfish, and blue catfish.
The community originated in 1887 as a coaling and water stop for Santa Fe Railroad steam locomotives, built at the highest elevation point along the line in Oklahoma County and named after railroad agent Edmond Burdick. A town established itself rapidly during the Oklahoma Land Run on April 22, 1889. Historic landmarks from this era include the first public schoolhouse in Oklahoma Territory, constructed in August 1889 on Second Street, and Gower Cemetery, established in 1889 by a formerly enslaved couple as a free burial ground. In late 1890, the territorial legislature created a teaching institution in Edmond that became the University of Central Oklahoma, where its historic Old North building opened in 1893.
Public art is displayed prominently throughout Edmond, featuring steel sculptures, stained glass, and murals. Stretches of Main Street feature sculptures on almost every corner, including a bronze representation of early land claimant Nannita R.H. Daisey. Near the entrance to the University of Central Oklahoma on Second Street, an 18-foot-tall bronze monument depicts Chief Touch the Clouds. Another notable physical feature is a 163-foot-tall cross standing at the Life.Church campus near State Highway 66 and Interstate 35.
Recreational amenities in Edmond include the Oak Tree National golf club and local sports organizations such as the Edmond Rugby Club and the university's rugby team. Public transit across the city is managed by the Citylink Edmond bus network, while freight traffic continues along the historical rail route via the BNSF line.
Edmond has a humid subtropical climate with warm summers and variable weather during transitional seasons. Summer conditions are tempered by regular southerly winds, whereas winter brings cold northerly winds along with occasional ice storms or snow. Positioned in Tornado Alley, the city periodically experiences severe weather, including high winds, tornadoes, hailstorms, heavy rainfall, and dry periods that can trigger wildfires.
