Why Eger
Eger is the county seat of Heves County and the second-largest city in Northern Hungary. Situated along the Eger Stream—a tributary of the Tisza River—the settlement sits in a basin between the Mátra and Bükk Mountains. It is widely recognized for its hilltop medieval castle, historic thermal baths, regional red wines, and impressive collection of Baroque, Rococo, and Neoclassical architecture. The city also hosts the primary campus of the Eszterházy Károly Catholic University.
Settled since the Stone Age, Eger grew into a major religious and economic hub after King Stephen I established an episcopal see here in the tenth century and built the original cathedral on Castle Hill. Walloon settlers from the Rhine region arrived in the eleventh and twelfth centuries, helping to establish the area's long-standing tradition of viticulture. Although ransacked during the 1241 Mongol invasion, the town recovered after receiving royal permission to construct a stone fortress. In 1552, Captain István Dobó led a famous defense of the castle against expanding Ottoman forces, an event later memorialized in Géza Gárdonyi's novel Eclipse of the Crescent Moon.
The fortress eventually fell in 1596, beginning a 91-year period of Ottoman rule during which Eger served as the seat of a Turkish vilayet. During this era, local churches were transformed into mosques, and public baths and minarets were erected. Holy League forces led by Charles V of Lorraine reclaimed the town in 1687. The eighteenth century brought significant prosperity and building activity, giving rise to landmarks such as the Neoclassical basilica—Hungary's second largest church—the Archiepiscopal Palace, the County Hall, and the Lyceum, which houses an astronomical museum and an archiepiscopal library.
Today, visitors to Eger can explore its architectural heritage and historic downtown districts. Key sights include the late seventeenth-century Eger Minaret, which stands as the northernmost remaining Ottoman minaret. Guests can also tour the castle complex, sample local wines cultivated in the surrounding hills, and experience the town's thermal bath tradition, which formally opened for spa tourism in 1933. The city is reached via a railway branch line extending from Füzesabony.
