Epang Palace

Located in western Xi’an, Shaanxi, Epang Palace (officially transcribed on site as Epang, though also pronounced Efang or Afang) is an ancient Chinese palace complex initiated in 212 BC under Qin Shi Huang, the first emperor of China. Built on the south bank of the Wei River outside the ancient capital at Xianyang, its grand layout was designed to reflect cosmological principles.

Although long assumed throughout history to have been an opulent palace burned to the ground when Xianyang was sacked in 206 BC, modern archaeological excavations reveal that only the front hall and a wall built upon its rammed earth foundation platform were completed before the Qin dynasty collapsed.
