You will find the Terracotta Army in Lintong County outside Xi'an, Shaanxi, China. Discovered by local farmers in 1974, this incredible collection of funerary art was buried in 210–209 BCE to protect Emperor Qin Shi Huang in his afterlife. As part of a massive 98-square-kilometer necropolis, it stands as one of the most significant archaeological discoveries ever unearthed.
When you visit the museum complex built over the excavation site, you can explore several main pits located about 1,500 meters east of the tomb mound. In Pit 1, the largest structure, you will see over 3,000 life-sized terracotta soldiers standing guard in eleven parallel corridors. Pit 2 features cavalry, infantry, and war chariots, while Pit 3 houses the command post with high-ranking officers.
Beyond military forces, archaeologists have uncovered non-military figures including officials, musicians, and remarkably detailed acrobats showing dynamic physical poses. Every figure is unique, showcasing distinct heights based on rank—with generals being the tallest—alongside individual facial features, hairstyles, and detailed body armor. Seeing these restored pottery figures in person gives you an unforgettable glimpse into ancient Chinese craftsmanship, imperial ambition, and historical artistry.
