Why Evansville

Evansville is the county seat of Vanderburgh County, located along a bend in the Ohio River in southwestern Indiana. Often referred to as the River City or Crescent Valley, it acts as a commercial, medical, and cultural center for the surrounding tri-state area spanning Indiana, Illinois, and Kentucky. Situated in a shallow valley framed by low rolling hills, the urban geography ranges from elevated terrain on the west side to low-lying eastern areas protected by levees.

Indigenous peoples inhabited the region for thousands of years, with Paleo-Indian presence recorded thousands of years ago. Between AD 1000 and 1400, the Mississippian culture maintained a permanent settlement at Angel Mounds, followed later by historic tribes including the Miami, Shawnee, and Delaware. French fur trappers were among the earliest Europeans to trade in the area. Founded in 1812 and incorporated in 1817, Evansville developed into a major 19th-century trade center driven by river steamboats, coal mining, and hardwood furniture manufacturing. During World War II, the city became a massive industrial center, producing naval landing ships and military aircraft.

Visitors to Evansville can experience a variety of historical, natural, and recreational sites. Downtown Evansville features early 20th-century architecture alongside a riverfront business district hosting shops, dining, and Bally's Evansville, the state's initial casino. Just east of downtown lies the Riverside district, which displays brick streets and historic architecture, including the Reitz Home Museum, an example of French Second Empire design. Outdoor and cultural attractions include the Mesker Park Zoo and Botanic Garden, Burdette Park, and the 240-acre Wesselman Woods Nature Preserve. Nearby, the Angel Mounds State Historic Site preserves ancient archaeological remnants.

Evansville experiences a humid subtropical climate with hot, humid summers and cool to cold winters. Average monthly temperatures vary from 32.5 °F (0.3 °C) in January to 78.0 °F (25.6 °C) in July. The area receives an average of 45.3 inches (1,150 mm) of precipitation annually, along with an average seasonal snowfall of 11.8 inches (30 cm).
