Why Everett
Everett is the county seat and most populous city in Snohomish County, Washington, situated approximately 25 miles north of Seattle within the Puget Sound region. Geographically, the city sits on a peninsula bounded by Port Gardner Bay and the mouth of the Snohomish River, stretching further south and west over time. It ranks as the seventh-largest city by population in the state of Washington.
The region's history begins with the Snohomish people, who inhabited the peninsula for thousands of years. Their primary village, Hibulb, was a heavily fortified settlement located near the mouth of the Snohomish River at Preston Point. European exploration occurred in 1792, followed by American homesteaders and loggers arriving in the mid-19th century. A syndicate of investors planned an industrial center in 1890, leading to official incorporation in 1893 around the arrival of the Great Northern Railway. Everett flourished as a prominent lumber processing hub, eventually becoming the county seat in 1897.
Throughout the 20th century, Everett's economic base transitioned from timber mills to aerospace and military operations. Following the establishment of Paine Field in 1936, the Boeing company built an aircraft assembly plant at the airport in 1967. This facility drove major industrial growth and residential expansion to the south and west. Today, Boeing remains the city's primary employer alongside Naval Station Everett, a U.S. Navy installation operational since 1994.
In addition to serving as a commercial hub, Everett acts as a residential community connected to Seattle via Interstate 5 and multi-modal transit options at Everett Station, including Sounder commuter trains, Amtrak, and commuter buses. Visitors can explore local heritage through educational signage at Legion Park, which stands atop the bluff overlooking the historic Hibulb village site. The city also offers community entertainment through various annual festivals and minor league sports teams, such as the Silvertips at Angel of the Winds Arena and the Aquasox at Funko Field.
