Why Fishers
Located 16 miles northeast of downtown Indianapolis in Hamilton County, Indiana, Fishers is a suburban municipality situated along the West Fork of the White River. Bordered by neighboring communities such as Carmel and Noblesville, the area covers nearly 36 square miles made up mostly of land alongside water bodies like Geist Reservoir.
The region's modern history began in 1802 when William Conner constructed a trading post and log cabin along the river. Following regional expansion and the mid-19th-century construction of the Peru & Indianapolis Railroad, the location was platted in 1872 as Fisher's Switch, incorporated in 1891, and officially named Fishers in 1908. Notable historic sites include the William Conner House and the West-Harris House, also known as the Ambassador House. Originally constructed in 1826 and relocated to Heritage Park at White River, the restored Ambassador House functions as a local history museum honoring diplomat Addison C. Harris.
Key cultural destinations in the city include Conner Prairie, an established living history museum on the former Conner farm property. At the core of the community, the Thomas A. Weaver Municipal Complex serves as the government hub and features an amphitheater, visitor resources, and public facilities. Downtown Fishers highlights a walkable, mixed-use district with a multipurpose trail built along the historical route of the Nickel Plate railroad line. Community celebrations are centered around the annual Spark!Fishers festival held in late June, featuring a parade, a 5k run, games, vendors, and fireworks display.
Recreational options include 25 parks and a network of greenway trails extending over 131 miles. Billericay Park, named after the community's sister city in England, provides baseball fields, woodland trails, and a splash pad, while Brooks School Park features accessible playgrounds, a outdoor fitness setup, and basketball courts. Sports fans can attend minor league hockey and indoor football games at the Fishers Event Center or basketball events at Best Choice Fieldhouse. The local humid continental climate features warm, humid summers around 85°F, pleasant spring and autumn conditions near 70°F, and cold winters with snow and freezing temperatures.
