Why Flagstaff
Flagstaff is a mountain city and the county seat of Coconino County in northern Arizona, situated roughly 146 miles north of Phoenix. Positioned at an elevation of approximately 7,000 feet near the southwestern edge of the Colorado Plateau and within the San Francisco volcanic field, the city borders the largest contiguous ponderosa pine forest in the continental United States. It sits along the intermittent Rio de Flag watercourse, directly south of the San Francisco Peaks and Mount Elden. Humphreys Peak, the highest point in Arizona at 12,637 feet, rises approximately ten miles to the north within the Kachina Peaks Wilderness.
The region's history includes early Indigenous settlements, notably the pre-Columbian Sinagua, whose agricultural land was enriched by 11th-century volcanic ash from Sunset Crater. Later inhabited by Ancestral Puebloans, Cohonina, Hopi, Yavapai, and Apache groups, the site was permanently settled in 1876 and took its name from a flag raised on a stripped pine tree during a July 4 celebration. The arrival of the transcontinental railroad in the 1880s spurred lumbering and ranching industries. In 1926, Historic Route 66 was established through Flagstaff, shifting the local economy toward tourism. Flagstaff gained international scientific prominence in 1930 when Pluto was discovered at its Lowell Observatory on Mars Hill, and its astronomical facilities later assisted NASA with Apollo moon-mapping missions.
Flagstaff's historic downtown is centered around Heritage Square and features numerous structures built from locally quarried Moenkopi red sandstone. Historic landmarks include the Weatherford Hotel, the Orpheum Theater, the Hotel Monte Vista, and the Motel Du Beau. The city is home to Northern Arizona University, the U.S. Geological Survey, the U.S. Naval Observatory Flagstaff Station, and Lowell Observatory. It also serves as a gateway to surrounding destinations such as the Grand Canyon, Oak Creek Canyon, Meteor Crater, Walnut Canyon, Wupatki National Monument, and the Coconino National Forest.
The city features a variable semi-arid climate characterized by a summer monsoon season alongside high annual levels of sunshine and snowfall. Visitors utilize nearby hiking trails across the San Francisco Peaks—some offering views stretching to the Grand Canyon—and access winter sports at the Arizona Snowbowl. Flagstaff is reached via regional highway networks, rail lines, and air connections to Phoenix through Flagstaff Pulliam Airport.
