Why Fort Smith
Fort Smith is a major municipality in Arkansas, serving as a seat for Sebastian County along the state border with Oklahoma. Located in the Arkansas River Valley where the Arkansas and Poteau rivers converge at Belle Point, the city is situated between the Ozark Mountains to the north and the Ouachita Mountains to the south. Encompassing nearly 65 square miles of land and water, it forms the center of a metropolitan region that extends across several counties in both Arkansas and Oklahoma.
Founded in 1817 as a military post on the western frontier, Fort Smith initially functioned as a center for the fur trade and an outpost intended to maintain peace between the Osage and Cherokee nations. During the 1830s, the facility was reestablished and expanded, playing a role in the federal government's forced relocation of Southeastern Native American tribes to Indian Territory. Over the mid-19th century, the community developed into a vital trading and supply center, serving as a departure hub for overland wagon trains heading to California during the 1849 Gold Rush and as a station for regional mail routes.
During the American Civil War, Union troops seized control of the city in 1863, turning it into a haven for refugees and formerly enslaved individuals. In the late 19th century, the municipality became widely known as a center for law enforcement in adjacent tribal territories, largely due to the federal court overseen by Judge Isaac C. Parker, who sentenced numerous individuals to death and earned the moniker the Hanging Judge. Economic activity broadened in the 20th century through natural gas discoveries, manufacturing industries, and military operations at Fort Chaffee, which later operated as a resettlement site for Vietnamese refugees in 1975.
Travelers interested in regional history can visit several designated sites, including the Fort Smith National Historic Site, which contains Judge Parker's former courthouse. The surrounding downtown area and the Chaffee Crossing Historic District feature additional cultural destinations, such as the Fort Smith Museum of History and the Fort Smith Regional Art Museum. The city experiences a humid subtropical climate characterized by hot, humid summer months, generally mild winter seasons, and occasional severe weather events such as tornadoes.
