Located in the middle of downtown Lagos on Lagos Island, Freedom Park offers you a unique journey into Nigeria's history and cultural heritage. Once the site of Her Majesty's Broad Street Prison—originally built in 1882 and rebuilt with English bricks in 1885 after anti-colonial sabotage—this former detention center held prominent political activists who fought for national independence, including Herbert Macaulay, Anthony Enahoro, Obafemi Awolowo, and Michael Imoudu. Designed by architect Theo Lawson and constructed to commemorate Nigeria's 50th anniversary of independence in October 2010, the site has been completely transformed from a former prison into a serene National Memorial, cultural landmark, and arts centre.

When you visit today, you will discover a peaceful haven built for collective contemplation, social events, and recreational entertainment. As you walk through the park, you can explore monuments that reveal Lagos' rich colonial legacy and historic prison past. In addition to its historical significance, the park stays vibrant with modern additions, such as the WAF.

Skatepark, which opened inside Freedom Park in March 2024 as the very first skatepark in Nigeria. Freedom Park stands as a powerful symbol of transformation and community right in the heart of Lagos.
