Why Fridley
Fridley is an inner-ring northern suburb situated within the Minneapolis–Saint Paul metropolitan area in Anoka County, Minnesota. Bordering the city of Minneapolis to its southwest, the community stretches along a narrow geographical corridor at the southern reach of the Anoka Sand Plain. The Mississippi River defines the city's western boundary, creating a natural edge shared with neighboring suburban communities across the water.
The local landscape encompasses just over ten square miles of land interspersed with several water bodies, including East Moore Lake, West Moore Lake, and Locke Lake. Rice Creek meanders through the central part of the city, while Springbrook Creek flows through the northwestern section. Along the Mississippi River corridor, Fridley's jurisdiction includes island terrain such as Banfill Island and portions of the Islands of Peace, which form part of the broader Mississippi National River and Recreation Area.
The area’s recorded history began in the mid-nineteenth century along the Red River Trails, an oxcart trade route established in 1844 between Saint Paul and Pembina. Settled initially under the name Manomin—derived from the Ojibwe word for wild rice—the community saw its first home, tavern, sawmill, and general store built near the mouth of Rice Creek. The settlement was later renamed in honor of Abram M. Fridley, a prominent local representative. Following rail connection in 1864, the township transitioned into a village in 1949 and was incorporated as a city in 1957, experiencing its primary population expansion through the mid-twentieth century.
Visitors and residents have access to more than 300 acres of municipal parkland. A central feature is the 127-acre Springbrook Nature Center, a protected reserve located near the city's northern border. The local park network supports a wide variety of outdoor recreation, offering facilities for baseball, softball, soccer, football, basketball, and tennis. During the colder winter months, public outdoor ice skating rinks equipped with warming houses are maintained throughout the city.
Fridley experiences a hot-summer humid continental climate characterized by significant temperature swings between its coldest winter months and warmest summer periods. Surrounded by neighboring suburbs such as Columbia Heights, Brooklyn Center, Blaine, and Spring Lake Park, the city is accessible via major roadway corridors including East River Road, which traces the historic path of the early oxcart trail along the riverbank.
