Why Fushun
Fushun is a prefecture-level city in northeastern China's Liaoning province, positioned along the Hun River roughly 45 kilometers east of Shenyang. Covering a total area of more than 11,000 square kilometers, the municipality combines an urban territory with surrounding mountainous terrain and dense forests. Long recognized as a major economic and heavy industrial hub, the city comprises four urban districts, one standard county, and two autonomous counties.
The city's recorded history includes the construction of a Ming dynasty walled outpost in 1384, designed to secure the regional borderlands. Fushun later played a pivotal role in the rise of the Qing dynasty, serving as the birthplace of the Manchu leader Nurhachi and hosting Xingjing City, the 1616 capital of the Late Jin dynasty. Following periods of Russian and Japanese control in the early twentieth century, the region underwent rapid industrial growth driven by railway expansions and mining operations, achieving official city status in 1937.
Visitors to Fushun can explore several significant historical landmarks, including two UNESCO World Heritage locations: the ancient site of Xingjing City and the royal Yongling tombs. Modern history is preserved at the Fushun War Criminal Prison, a former facility where China's final emperor, Puyi, was detained, which now functions as a museum. The Pingdingshan Tragedy Memorial Hall Ruins documents a 1931 wartime massacre and features a preserved pit containing hundreds of victims. Additionally, the Lei Feng Memorial Museum in the Wanghua District honors the famed Chinese soldier who was stationed and died in the city.
Nature and recreation are also central to the region. The Saer Hu Scenic Area features the Dahuofang Reservoir, which spans 110 square kilometers and stands as the largest artificial lake in northeast China. Nearby, Houshi National Forest Park offers high mountain peaks and forested wilderness, designated as an AAAA-rated tourist destination. Within the urban center, the Ring of Life monument features a 157-meter circular tower illuminated by 12,000 LED lights and equipped with an observation deck looking out over the city.
Historically nicknamed the "City of Coal," Fushun developed around vast mineral deposits, including timber, iron, and one of the world's largest open-pit coal mines, the West Open Mine. Today, its economy encompasses energy production, petroleum refining, chemicals, textiles, and electronics. The city sits approximately 40 kilometers from Shenyang Taoxian Airport, with direct railway and highway networks offering access to neighboring Jilin Province as well as the coastal ports of Yingkou and Dalian.
