Why Garden Grove
Garden Grove is a city located in the northern region of Orange County, California. Covering a total area of 18 square miles, the municipality shares borders with neighboring communities including Anaheim, Cypress, Orange, Stanton, Fountain Valley, Seal Beach, and Los Alamitos. State Route 22, also referred to as the Garden Grove Freeway, runs directly east to west through the city, while the district of West Garden Grove lies to the west of Beach Boulevard.
The area was originally part of Rancho Las Bolsas, a Mexican land grant dedicated to cattle ranching. Founded in 1874 by Alonzo Cook, the settlement organized a local school district and a Methodist church in its first year. It remained a quiet agricultural crossroad until the arrival of the Pacific Electric Railroad in 1905. The rail connection encouraged tourism and new settlement, helping the local economy thrive through the cultivation of oranges, walnuts, chili peppers, and strawberries. After an earthquake destroyed much of the business district in 1933, a post-World War II population surge eventually led to the city's incorporation in 1956, coinciding with the opening of the Orange County Plaza shopping center.
Beginning in the 1970s, migration led to the creation of a major commercial corridor known as Little Seoul. Recognized as the oldest Korean business district in Orange County and the second largest on the West Coast, this neighborhood remains a prominent cultural hub. The city also supports local arts through facilities like the Gem Theater and the Festival Amphitheater, an open-air venue that hosts summer theatrical performances by Shakespeare Orange County.
A central highlight of the local event calendar is the Garden Grove Strawberry Festival, which takes place over Memorial Day weekend. Established in 1958 to celebrate the area's farming heritage, the festival draws an estimated 250,000 visitors each year. Festivities include carnival rides, musical performances, vendor stalls, a celebrity parade, and the cutting of a massive strawberry shortcake. Travelers reaching the city can utilize the Garden Grove Freeway or rely on public transit service provided by the Orange County Transportation Authority, which operates multiple bus routes throughout the area.
