Why Garland
Garland is a city situated in Dallas County, Texas, with portions extending into neighboring Collin and Rockwall counties. Located directly northeast of Dallas, it forms part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. Encompassing 57.1 square miles of land, Garland had a population of 246,018 as of the 2020 census, making it the 93rd most populous city in the United States and the 13th largest in Texas. The city is connected to downtown Dallas through public transportation options, including local bus routes and two DART Blue Line rail stations.
Settlers first migrated to the local Peters colony region around 1850, though established communities only began emerging in 1874. Development initially centered around two competing settlements, Embree and Duck Creek, which grew alongside the Santa Fe Railroad depot. To resolve a dispute regarding the placement of the local post office, the postal facility was relocated between the two communities in 1887 and named in honor of U.S. Attorney General Augustus Hill Garland. The surrounding settlements soon consolidated, and Garland was officially incorporated as a city in 1891. Municipal infrastructure developed further in the 1920s with the creation of a local electrical generator, which evolved into the municipal electric provider Garland Power and Light.
Garland experienced significant suburban growth following World War II, with its population expanding steadily through the late 20th century. The municipality encompasses a variety of distinct districts and historic neighborhoods, including Spring Park, Firewheel, Oakridge, Centerville, and the Travis College Hill Addition. Economic activity in the city is supported by a diverse commercial base that includes food processing, electronics, steel fabrication, oilfield equipment, and hat manufacturing, notably through the long-standing Resistol hat production facility. A historic KRLD radio transmitter tower, constructed in 1937, also continues to operate within the city.
Visitors to Garland can access various entertainment, cultural, and commercial sites. In the northern section of the city, Hawaiian Falls waterpark provides aquatic recreation, while the Curtis Culwell Center functions as a regional arena and conference facility. Shopping and leisure are concentrated at Firewheel Town Center, an outdoor Main Street-style mall featuring more than 100 commercial establishments and a movie theater. Near City Hall, the transit-oriented 5th Street Crossing development offers retail and residential spaces. Performing arts are hosted at the municipal Granville Arts Center complex, which incorporates two proscenium theaters and the Plaza Theatre.
The city features a culturally diverse population, including a prominent Vietnamese American community served by commercial centers along Walnut Street. Geographically, Garland falls within a humid subtropical climate zone. July is typically the warmest month of the year, with a record high temperature of 111 °F (44 °C), while January is generally the coolest. May brings the highest average precipitation to the area.
