Giotto's Campanile is a famous free-standing bell tower located on the Piazza del Duomo in Florence, Italy, standing right next to the Basilica of Santa Maria del Fiore and the Baptistry of St. John. Designed by the celebrated painter Giotto di Bondone starting in 1334, this 84.7-meter (277.9-foot) tall square structure is a magnificent showcase of Florentine Gothic architecture.

As you explore the tower, you will admire its rich geometric exterior patterns crafted from vibrant white Carrara, green Prato, and red Siena marble. Divided into five horizontal stages, the building features remarkable decorative artwork, including lower-level hexagonal reliefs depicting human history, lozenge-shaped allegorical panels, and statue niches crafted by renowned masters like Andrea Pisano and Donatello. The upper three levels, completed by Francesco Talenti, feature large vertical windows cleverly designed to counter perspective effects.

Although the original sculptures are now housed in the nearby Museo dell'Opera del Duomo for preservation, accurate copies adorn the façade today. For an incredible reward, you can climb the 414 steps up to the open-air top terrace, where you will take in breathtaking scenic panoramic views overlooking Florence and its surrounding rolling hills.
