Why Goodyear
Goodyear is a city situated in Maricopa County, Arizona, positioned approximately 17 miles west of downtown Phoenix in the Sonoran Desert. The municipal boundaries cover over 191 square miles, extending from borders with neighboring communities such as Glendale, Avondale, Litchfield Park, Tolleson, and Buckeye down into the Rainbow Valley. The Gila River flows through the city near the Estrella Mountains.
The community was originally established in 1917 when the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company purchased 16,000 acres of land to cultivate cotton for vehicle tire cords. Military operations during World War II prompted the construction of an airfield in the 1940s, which later became the Phoenix Goodyear Airport. Goodyear formally incorporated as a town in 1946 with a modest collection of residences and small businesses, eventually achieving city status in 1985. Much of the original agricultural acreage was later sold for suburban housing developments.
Goodyear is widely known as a hub for professional baseball spring training. The city-owned Goodyear Ballpark, constructed alongside dedicated clubhouses and practice fields, hosts Major League Baseball's Cleveland Guardians and Cincinnati Reds during their spring sessions. The venue also accommodates home games for Arizona Complex League baseball teams.
Beyond its athletic venues, Goodyear features expansive master-planned residential areas including Estrella, Palm Valley, and PebbleCreek. Estrella spans 20,000 acres near the southern mountain range, while PebbleCreek caters to active adults with 54 holes of championship golf, fitness centers, and dining options. Civic spaces include a city hall complex complete with a multi-story public library, a two-acre park, and retail space.
Outdoor enthusiasts can explore the Estrella Mountain Regional Park, an area covering nearly 20,000 acres of predominantly untouched desert terrain. The park contains eight individual trails that combine for more than 30 miles of paths, alongside a 9.5-mile track and two baseball diamonds. Air travel facilities in the area center on Phoenix Goodyear Airport, which features an 8,500-foot runway used by international airlines for aircraft storage and maintenance, though it does not offer commercial passenger service.
Goodyear experiences a hot desert climate characterized by more than 300 sunny days and approximately ten inches of rain each year. Winters feature mild daytime high temperatures ranging from 60 to 75 °F and nighttime lows between 40 and 50 °F. Summers are exceptionally hot, with daily highs at or above 100 °F throughout June, July, and August, occasionally reaching over 115 °F. During late summer, the North American Monsoon often brings dust storms and evening thunderstorms to the region.
