Why Grand Rapids
Located along the banks of the Grand River roughly 25 miles east of Lake Michigan, Grand Rapids serves as the seat of Kent County and functions as the primary economic and cultural hub of West Michigan. It is the second-most populous municipality in the state after Detroit, anchoring a metropolitan area with a population of approximately 1.2 million that stands as the 49th-largest in the United States.
The area's history began with its original Hopewell and later Odawa inhabitants, who maintained villages along the river. French-speaking fur traders established trading posts in the region during the early nineteenth century, including a post founded by Joseph and Madeline La Framboise in 1806 near the junction of the Grand and Thornapple Rivers. Permanent European-American settlement grew in the 1820s and 1830s through key figures like Louis Campau, who purchased downtown acreage, and Lucius Lyon, who surveyed the surrounding land. The community incorporated as a village in 1838 and officially accepted cityhood in 1850 following economic growth supported by river transport and early gypsum mining along Plaster Creek.
Grand Rapids became widely recognized as the "Furniture City" owing to its thriving furniture manufacturing industry, which continues to be a prominent regional trade alongside major contemporary businesses such as Steelcase, Meijer, and Corewell Health. The city boasts a dynamic cultural landscape, anchored by institutions including the Grand Rapids Art Museum and the Grand Rapids Public Museum. Travelers can also visit the Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park, a leading horticultural and artistic attraction, or experience ArtPrize, an annual international art competition held in the city.
Beyond its museums and public art, Grand Rapids holds the title of "Beer City USA" due to its extensive selection of local craft breweries, such as Founders Brewing Company. The city is also notably linked to U.S. President Gerald R. Ford, who spent his childhood here. Visitors can explore the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum, where the former president and his wife Betty are buried on the grounds. Reflecting his lasting local legacy, the city's commercial airport—Gerald R. Ford International Airport—and the Gerald R. Ford Freeway are both named in his honor.
