Great Mosque of Sana’a

Step into the Great Mosque of Sana'a, the largest and most notable house of worship in the Old City of Sana'a. Commissioned by Muhammad around 630 CE (6 AH) within the garden of the Persian governors, this ancient sanctuary is recognized as the first mosque built outside of Mecca and Medina. Set near the city's ancient suq between al-Qati and al-Sirar, it stands today as part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Old City of Sana'a.

You will discover incredible architectural layers built from spolia of pre-Islamic structures, including Sheba's Ghumdan Palace and the Axumite Christian Church of al-Qalis. Walk through prayer halls featuring interior stone arcades influenced by Byzantine and Axumite design, and look up to marvel at carved, painted wooden ceilings crafted from lacunari wood—including wings restored by Queen Arwa al-Sulayhi in 1130 CE. Within the central 80 by 60-meter courtyard, you will see a 16th-century domed Ottoman structure decorated in alternating colored ablaq stonework, which historically served as a treasury and library.

The site is also famous for major discoveries like the Sana'a manuscript and thousands of rare early Islamic texts.
