Located at 110 Allenby Street just east of the Shalom Meir Tower, the Great Synagogue of Tel Aviv offers you a fascinating look into the city's history. Originally designed by Yehuda Magidovitch and completed in 1926, the building stands in Tel Aviv's bustling business and financial district. The site was built in an Art Deco style, but a 1969 renovation led by architect Aryeh Elhanani added a Modernist façade with arches and updated the interior to reflect contemporary tastes. Inside, you can admire intricate lighting, a impressive large dome, and beautiful stained glass windows designed to replicate those lost in European synagogues during the Holocaust. While the synagogue once sat in the heart of Little Tel Aviv, demographic changes in the 1960s reduced its congregation size.
Today, you will find the main sanctuary used primarily for Jewish weddings and special occasions, while daily services occur in a small lower-level synagogue. It has served historical roles ranging from a 1946 British military arms discovery site to a film location for Alex Is Lovesick. Restoration efforts are underway to return the building to its original 1920s appearance.
