Why Green Bay
Green Bay is a major port city situated in Brown County in eastern Wisconsin, located at the mouth of the Fox River along an inlet of Lake Michigan. As the third-most populous city in the state, it serves as the hub of a metropolitan area home to roughly 335,000 residents. About 14 percent of the city's area lies within the reservation of the Oneida Nation of Wisconsin. Situated approximately 90 miles north of Milwaukee, Green Bay is easily reached via the junction of Interstate 43 and Interstate 41.
Long before European arrival, the surrounding region was inhabited by Native American tribes, including the Menominee and the Ho-Chunk. French explorer Jean Nicolet set up a fur trading post at the location in 1634, creating one of North America's earliest permanent European settlements. Great Britain assumed control of the area in 1761, during which time permanent European families established roots and British fur traders popularized the name Green Bay due to the spring hues of the water and shoreline. After coming under United States jurisdiction following the War of 1812, the military constructed Fort Howard in 1816. The borough of Green Bay was formed in 1838 and formally incorporated as a city in 1854.
During the 19th and 20th centuries, Green Bay transformed from a fur-trading outpost into a bustling commercial and industrial center. The opening of the Erie Canal and the arrival of three major railroads in the 1860s helped fuel the growth of the local timber industry. Following the construction of its initial paper mill in 1865, paper manufacturing grew to become a dominant local enterprise. The city's cultural character was shaped by a large influx of 19th-century European immigrants, particularly from Belgium, alongside settlers from Germany, Scandinavia, Ireland, the Netherlands, England, and France.
Green Bay is prominently known as the home of the Green Bay Packers, a professional American football team founded in 1919. Visitors can explore the city's sports history at Lambeau Field and along the Packers Heritage Trail, which connects significant local historical sites. Geographically, the city features a humid continental climate influenced by Lake Michigan, resulting in four distinct seasons. Summers are typically warm and humid, with August experiencing the highest precipitation, while winters are cold and snowy.
