Why Greenville

Greenville is a city in Northeast Texas serving as the seat of Hunt County. Positioned approximately 50 miles northeast of Dallas and 30 miles west of Sulphur Springs, the community sits on the eastern edge of the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex and is known as the "Gateway to East Texas." The city covers roughly 33.4 square miles within the Texas Blackland Prairies and East Central Texas forests, with the Cowleech Fork of the Sabine River flowing through its northeastern sector.

Established in 1846, the town was named in honor of Thomas J. Green, a prominent contributor to the founding of the Texas Republic. During the Civil War, local residents were politically divided between Unionist and Confederate causes, a history now commemorated by a historical marker in "The SPOT" Park along downtown's Lee Street. Following the conflict, Greenville developed a strong agricultural economy centered on cotton production and became home to a major compress. Today, its heritage is showcased at the Audie Murphy/American Cotton Museum, which displays regional artifacts including a historic downtown street sign originally installed in 1921.

Visitors to Greenville can explore its revitalized historic downtown area, which features boutique shopping, antique malls, public gardens, Landon Winery, and the restored vintage Texan Theater. The community maintains an active local arts scene anchored by the 1,400-seat Greenville Municipal Auditorium, which hosts classical and jazz performances by the Greenville Pops Orchestra, while local theater companies present regular stage productions. Additional recreational options include the Splash Kingdom Water Park located along Interstate 30.

The city hosts a variety of community celebrations throughout the year, including the Lee Street Jamboree held each September, which features the Cotton Patch Challenge Bicycle Ride. Other notable annual events include the Bob Wills Fiddle Festival in November, the Hunt County Festival of the Arts, the Hunt County Fair, Lit-Con, the Fourth of July Bottle Rocket Bash, and several traditional holiday parades.

Greenville experiences a humid subtropical climate characterized by long, hot summers, short and mild winters, and moderate precipitation. Travelers can reach the municipality via Interstate 30 as well as U.S. Highways 67, 69, and 380. Commercial air travel is available through Dallas Love Field, situated roughly 55 miles away, and Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, located 70 miles west, while general aviation is served locally by Majors Airport.
