Why Gresham
Gresham is a prominent city situated in the Willamette Valley within Multnomah County, Oregon. Bordered by Portland to the northwest and southwest, it serves as a central economic hub for the eastern portion of the county. The area encompasses over 23 square miles, characterized by hilly terrain along its eastern border toward Troutdale and the Columbia River, and is crossed by local waterways including Johnson Creek and Fairview Creek.
The region was originally inhabited by the Kalapuya Native Americans. Settlers arrived in the early 1850s when the Powell brothers established claims in an area initially called Powell's Valley. After briefly holding other postal designations such as Campground, the municipality was officially incorporated in 1905 and named after Civil War general Walter Quintin Gresham. Agriculture formed the backbone of the early local economy, centered largely on the cultivation of raspberries, grapes, and various vegetables.
Visitors exploring the area can observe several sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These historical landmarks include mid-to-late 19th-century farmsteads like the Jacob Zimmerman House and Hamlin–Johnson House, as well as Victorian Queen Anne residences built around 1900. Other notable historic properties include the 1913 Carnegie Library building, modern architectural homes, and the Gresham Pioneer Cemetery, which dates back to 1859.
Recreational opportunities are available throughout the city's parks and trail networks. Major public spaces include Main City Park near the central district, Hogan Butte Nature Park, and Red Sunset Park. Outdoor enthusiasts and cyclists can utilize an array of connected multi-use paths, including the Springwater Corridor, the 40-Mile Loop, the Gresham–Fairview Trail, and the Kelly Creek Greenway Trail. Golf courses and local cultural venues, such as the Mt. Hood Theatre, offer additional options for leisure.
Gresham features a Mediterranean climate with warm, sunny summer afternoons and minimal precipitation, while winter months bring cool temperatures, high cloud cover, and frequent rain. Transportation to and from the city is convenient, with access provided by Interstate 84 from the west and U.S. Route 26 from the east. The area is also connected via mass transit, including bus lines and the MAX Light Rail Blue Line, which makes several stops throughout the community.
