Why Gualeguay
Situated along the banks of the Gualeguay River, Gualeguay is an Argentine city located in the province of Entre Ríos. Positioned approximately 226 kilometers from the provincial capital of Paraná and 234 kilometers northwest of Buenos Aires, the town sits within a region framed by major waterways. It is distinct from the nearby city of Gualeguaychú, which lies 86 kilometers away.
The settlement was established on March 20, 1783, by Tomás de Rocamora, a military surveyor dispatched by Juan José de Vértiz y Salcedo, the Viceroy of the Río de la Plata. Originally named San Antonio de Gualeguay to honor its patron saint, the town was founded alongside other settlements in the area by Rocamora, who also coined the name for the Entre Ríos province.
Gualeguay is recognized as the birthplace of several prominent Argentine figures across diverse fields. Its cultural history includes post-impressionist artist Cesáreo Bernaldo de Quirós, renowned anthropologist Juan Bautista Ambrosetti, filmmaker and producer Fernando Ayala, and actress Beatriz Bonnet. The city also produced notable sports figures, including Jorge Burruchaga, who scored the winning goal in the 1986 World Cup final, and Lisandro Martínez, a national team defender born in 1998 who won the World Cup in 2022.
As recorded in the 2001 census, Gualeguay had a population of roughly 39,000 residents. Its riverside geographic setting and rich history make it a notable urban stop within the interior of Entre Ríos.
