Why Hebi
Hebi is a prefecture-level city situated in the northern part of Henan province, China. Set within a mountainous landscape along the edge of the Shanxi plateau, the city occupies a distinct regional position. It lies approximately 25 miles south of Anyang, 40 miles northeast of Xinxiang, and 65 miles north of Kaifeng, placing it within reach of several other notable municipal centers in northern Henan.
The origin of the name Hebi is documented in the historical record known as the History of Jin. According to traditional accounts, cranes were historically observed resting on the steep rock faces of the southern mountains in ancient times. As a result, the nearby elevation was designated as Heshan, meaning crane mountain, while the surrounding settlement was called Hebi, a name that translates directly to cranes resting on cliffs.
Administratively, the prefecture-level municipality oversees three urban districts and two rural counties. The administrative districts comprise Qibin District, Shancheng District, and Heshan District. The accompanying counties under its jurisdiction are Qi County and Xun County, which is also referred to as Junxian County.
The urban core of Hebi has experienced a series of geographical relocations throughout the mid-to-late twentieth century. In 1957, local administrative functions were initially placed in Hebiji before shifting southward to Zhongshan District later that year following the development of local mining facilities. The urban center was subsequently relocated to Dahu in 1959. Because surrounding lands were heavily impacted by ground subsidence from mining activity, further expansion in that area became limited.
To accommodate future growth, municipal authorities established the Qibin Economic Development Zone in 1992 at the intersection of Qi County and Xun County. Following the expansion of this economic zone, the political and administrative hub was officially moved to Qibin District in May 1999. Today, Qibin District functions as the primary economic and political center of Hebi.
The modern footprint of Hebi includes distinct populated sectors and industrial components. A major built-up conurbation encompasses Qibin District and Qi County, alongside the Hebi New Area economic development zone. Meanwhile, Shancheng District and Heshan District form a separate urbanized zone situated closer to Anyang, reflecting the city's history of coal mining and evolving development.
