Why Hegang
Hegang, historically also referred to as Heli or Xingshan, is a prefecture-level city located in northeastern Heilongjiang province, China. Set along the southeastern portion of the Lesser Khingan Mountains, the municipality covers an extensive geography defined by major waterways. The Songhua River borders the city to the south across from Jiamusi, while the Amur River runs along its northern boundary, defining a 235-kilometer international border with Russia's Jewish Autonomous Oblast.
The region remained largely uninhabited until the late nineteenth century when farming initiatives were introduced during the Qing Dynasty. Following the discovery of a major coalfield in 1914, the settlement developed rapidly around its rich mineral resources. Over the course of the twentieth century, the locality underwent significant expansion, including the construction of a regional railway in 1926, periods of foreign control, and eventual designation as a prefecture-level city in 1949. Although Hegang grew into a key coal-producing hub with a major thermal power station built in the early 1970s, the local economy has increasingly broadened to include graphite, clay, silica, processing industries, and agriculture centered on crops like rice, maize, and soybeans.
Hegang features a humid continental climate with distinct seasonal variations. Winters are long, bitterly cold, and dry, with average temperatures in January dropping to −16.6 °C (2 °F). Summers are warm and humid, with July temperatures averaging 21.7 °C (71.1 °F). Most of the region's annual precipitation of 600 to 650 millimeters falls during the summer months between June and August.
Travelers can reach and navigate the area via a comprehensive roadway network, including highways connecting Hegang to Yichun, Jiamusi, and Luobei. The provincial capital of Harbin is located less than a four-hour drive away. For broader regional connections, Luobei Port on the Amur River is a one-hour drive from the city, as is Jiamusi Airport, which provides direct air service to major Chinese cities such as Beijing and Dalian.
