Why Herzliya
Herzliya is a coastal city located along the central shoreline of Israel, situated in the northern portion of the Tel Aviv District. Named in honor of Theodor Herzl, the city is widely recognized for its thriving technology sector and entrepreneurial environment. The municipality features an upscale beachfront district to the west known as Herzliya Pituah, which extends along the Mediterranean coast and is framed to the east by the regional coastal highway.
The city presents a varied urban landscape, ranging from working-class neighborhoods to exclusive residential enclaves. Herzliya Pituah stands out as a major commercial center, housing luxury villas, foreign embassy residences, corporate headquarters, and a high-tech industrial park. This seaside area also accommodates prominent medical facilities, dining venues, and high-end coastal hotels, contributing to the city's elevated median household income.
Established in 1924 as a semi-cooperative agricultural settlement by a mix of new immigrants and veteran residents, Herzliya expanded steadily before officially receiving city status in 1960. Historical sites throughout the area offer insight into diverse eras. The Beit Rishonim museum documents early municipal history inside a founder's home, while notable heritage sites sit along the coast. To the northwest lies the archaeological site of Apollonia–Arsuf, containing remains of a Crusader town and a moat-encircled fortress, alongside the coastal site of Tel Michal and the Sidna Ali Mosque.
Cultural and academic life in Herzliya is supported by prominent institutions, including the Herzliya Museum of Contemporary Art, a local cinematheque, and Herzliya Studios, the nation's largest television and film production studio. The city is also the location of Reichman University, Israel's only private university. For recreation, residents and visitors utilize the 200-acre Herzliya Park, created with a focus on preserving the natural terrain of the former Ha Bassa swamp, as well as Sportek Herzliya, a 30-acre outdoor public sports complex.
Along the waterfront, the Herzliya Marina serves as a central hub for maritime activity, flanked by multi-story shopping malls, cinemas, and cultural venues. Regional travel is facilitated by major roadway interchanges and the central Herzliya railway station, which provides direct train links to destination hubs including Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, Haifa, Beersheva, and Ben Gurion Airport.
