Why Hesperia
Hesperia is a city in San Bernardino County, California, situated in the Victor Valley region of the Mojave Desert. Located 35 miles north of downtown San Bernardino, it is bordered by Victorville to the north, Apple Valley to the east, and Oak Hills to the west. Situated at an elevation ranging from 3,200 to 4,000 feet above sea level, Hesperia is locally recognized as part of the High Desert. Geographic features around the city include a mesa on its southern edge, the California Aqueduct, and the Mojave River.
The city experiences a cold desert climate marked by substantial diurnal temperature variations. Summer days are hot, with temperatures frequently approaching 100 degrees Fahrenheit, though evenings cool down noticeably and late-summer monsoonal conditions can bring sporadic storms. Winter days average around 60 degrees Fahrenheit, with overnight lows regularly dropping near freezing. Mountains to the south and west create a rain shadow, keeping average annual precipitation to just over six inches, accompanied by occasional light snowfall.
The indigenous Serrano people, including the Vanyume subgroup, were the earliest inhabitants of the area and gathered in local settlements such as the village of Wá’peat along the Mojave River. The territory became a Spanish land grant in 1781 and was annexed by the United States in 1848. Railroad land developers laid out the town site in 1891 along the Santa Fe Railroad, naming it after the Greek deity Hesperus. Following the construction of major regional highways like US Route 66 and Interstate 15, Hesperia transitioned from a small settlement into a larger suburban city.
Outdoor recreation and unique landmarks are accessible throughout the area. Hesperia Lake Park, an artificial lake located on the southeastern side of town, offers fishing, camping, and venue space for local festivities. Aviation hobbyists can visit the Radio Control Model Aircraft Park on Arrowhead Lake Road. Golfers can play at the Hesperia Golf Course, which hosted PGA Tour events during the 1950s and 1960s. Hesperia is also the home of Cal-Earth, an educational organization that demonstrates earth-based Superadobe building methods engineered for hot, dry climates.
