Why Heyuan
Heyuan is a prefecture-level city located in the northeastern region of Guangdong Province, China, situated where the Dong River meets the Xinfeng River. Translating literally to "origin of the river," the municipality connects Guangdong's coastal territories with its inland hinterland. The administrative region spans 15,800 square kilometers, encompassing Yuancheng District alongside the counties of Dongyuan, Heping, Longchuan, Zijin, and Lianping. The local geography features extensive hilly land, cultivated fields, rainforests, and natural waterways.
Officially recognized as the "Hometown of the Dinosaur in China," Heyuan is famous for its extensive paleontological finds. Thousands of dinosaur egg fossils dating to the Late Cretaceous era, as well as fossilized footprints and skeletons, have been discovered in the area. The local museum holds a Guinness World Record for possessing more than 10,000 dinosaur egg specimens. Culturally, the region is home to a Hakka-majority population, with residents speaking Yuezhong and Yuetai Hakka dialects, as well as Dongjiang Bendihua near the Dong River.
Visitors to Heyuan can explore numerous natural and historical attractions. The region contains Guangdong's largest body of water, the Xinfengjiang Reservoir, which is also known as Wanlu Lake. Within the Xinfengjiang Forest Park, visitors can observe a notably tall fountain. Additional scenic destinations include Dagui Mountain, the Sujiawei Round House, the Neiguan Mountains and rivers in Lianping County, the scenic sites of Huoshan and Shuikeng in Longchuan County, and the natural spots of Huanglong Crag and Zhangxi in Dongyuan County.
In addition to tourism, Heyuan is an active agricultural and resource center. The surrounding countryside produces Chinese kiwi fruit, sweet tangerines, green tea, garlic, bamboo mats, and dried mushrooms from the Jiulian area. The region also yields Hakka brewed liquor, pot culture items, and bottled water drawn from Xinfengjiang. Beneath the surface, the area holds valuable mineral deposits, including iron ore, tungsten, tin, and fluorite.
Heyuan features a monsoon-influenced humid subtropical climate with mild winters, wet springs, long humid summers, and sunny autumns. The area experiences an annual average temperature of 21.83 °C, with the heaviest rainfall taking place between April and June. Transport into the area is supported by State Highways 105 and 205, alongside major train connections via the Beijing-Kowloon and Guangzhou-Meizhou-Shantou railways. Cargo ships also navigate the Dong River to link Heyuan with major regional destinations such as Huizhou, Dongguan, and Guangzhou.
