Why Homestead
Homestead is a suburban city and significant agricultural area located in Miami-Dade County, South Florida. Positioned approximately 26 miles southwest of Miami and 25 miles northwest of Key Largo, the city sits between Biscayne National Park to the east and Everglades National Park to the west. It forms a shared metropolitan area alongside neighboring Florida City and officially serves as a gateway community to both surrounding national parks.
The city's origins are tied to the development of the Florida East Coast Railway near the turn of the twentieth century. Rail engineers and workers referred to the unsettled territory along the line as Homestead, leading to the establishment of a town site around a newly opened station in 1904. Homestead was officially incorporated in 1913, making it the second-oldest city in Miami-Dade County. Throughout its history, the community has weathered major storms, including a severe hurricane in 1926 and Category 5 Hurricane Andrew in August 1992.
Visitors to the area have access to a variety of local landmarks and outdoor sites. The historic downtown district contains structural landmarks such as the historic Redland Hotel, built in 1904, and the Seminole Theatre. Points of interest in and around the surrounding communities include Coral Castle, the Fruit and Spice Park, Knaus Berry Farm, Monkey Jungle, and the Everglades Alligator Farm. Motorsport events are held at the Homestead–Miami Speedway, while coastal activities can be accessed along Biscayne Bay at Homestead Bayfront Park and Marina.
Homestead is connected to the wider region via U.S. 1, State Road 997, and the Homestead Extension of Florida's Turnpike. Public transit includes Miami-Dade Transit bus routes linking to regional rail systems and the Miami airport, as well as a free local circulator trolley operating daily through primary residential, commercial, and historic areas. From January through April, a free weekend national parks trolley provides public transit directly to Everglades and Biscayne National Parks.
Homestead features a tropical monsoon climate with hot, humid summers and warm, dry winters. High summer temperatures average between 90 and 92 degrees Fahrenheit, with most annual rainfall occurring during a wet season running from mid-May to early October. Winter days bring warm average high temperatures between 68 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit, though brief cold fronts occasionally pass through the region between November and March.
