Why Hoover
Located along the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains in north-central Alabama, Hoover is the sixth-largest city in the state. Situated across Jefferson and Shelby counties, the municipality forms part of the greater Birmingham metropolitan area. Covering roughly 50 square miles, it sits just 11 miles south of downtown Birmingham and serves as a major commercial and residential hub in the region.
Originally known as the Green Valley community starting in the 1930s, the area functioned primarily as a quiet residential enclave for several decades. It was officially incorporated as the City of Hoover in 1967, taking its name from local insurance company owner William H. Hoover. The municipality expanded significantly in 1980 by annexing the commercial and residential district of Riverchase, followed by the opening of Interstate 459 and its strategic junction with Interstate 65. The arrival of the multiuse Riverchase Galleria complex in 1986 further accelerated economic activity and local development.
Hoover features a commercial landscape centred around several key retail and business corridors. The Central Business District is defined by the intersection of U.S. Route 31, U.S. Route 280, and State Route 150. A major focal point is the Riverchase Galleria, a prominent complex integrating retail stores, hotel accommodations, and office spaces. Additional shopping and dining hubs include Patton Creek along State Route 150 and the Village at Lee Branch on U.S. Route 280, alongside corporate facilities located within the Riverchase Office Park.
Visitors to Hoover can explore a variety of outdoor spaces, cultural sites, and sports facilities. Local points of interest include the scenic Aldridge Botanical Gardens and the natural landscape of the Moss Rock Preserve. For entertainment, the city houses The Library Theatre as well as the Hoover Metropolitan Stadium. Historically the home venue of the Birmingham Barons minor league baseball team from 1988 through 2013, the stadium continues to host notable athletic events, including the Southeastern Conference baseball tournament.
Reaching and navigating Hoover is straightforward due to its position along several primary travel routes. Interstates 65 and 459 cross within the city limits, providing connections to nearby regional destinations such as Tuscaloosa, Montgomery, and Atlanta. Major arterial roadways including U.S. Routes 31 and 280 carry local traffic across the city, while regional public transportation is provided by the Birmingham-Jefferson County Transit Authority.
