Why Huainan

Huainan is a prefecture-level city situated in the north-central part of Anhui Province, China. The city takes its name from the ancient Han-era Principality of Huainan and is widely recognized as the birthplace of tofu. Historically and economically, the area is known for its significant coal extraction and thermal power generation. Its civic symbols include the Chinese rose as the official flower and the Old-World Plane Tree as the official tree.

Geographically, Huainan's main urban area sits on a plain along the southern bank of the Huai River. It is bounded by Gaotang Lake to the east and a forested hilly region to the south, while Bagongshan District and Shou County lie to the west. Huainan borders several surrounding administrative areas, including the provincial capital of Hefei to the south, as well as Lu'an, Fuyang, Bozhou, Bengbu, and Chuzhou. The prefecture encompasses seven county-level divisions made up of five districts—Tianjia'an, Panji, Xiejiaji, Datong, and Bagongshan—alongside Fengtai and Shou counties, in addition to the Shannan New Area high-tech development zone.

Cultural life in Huainan is tied to its culinary heritage. The city has celebrated its historical connections to soybean production by hosting events such as the China Tofu Cultural Festival, which features national bean product exhibitions. The municipality is also an educational center within the region, hosting institutions such as the Anhui University of Science and Technology, Huainan Normal University, and Huainan United University, alongside various vocational colleges and established local high schools.

Travelers accessing Huainan can utilize multiple regional transport links. The city is connected via major roadways including National Highway G206 as well as the S17 Benghe and S12 Chuxin expressways. Rail infrastructure includes the central Huainan railway station, while high-speed train services operate through Huainan East railway station on the Hefei–Bengbu line and Huainan South railway station on the Shangqiu–Hangzhou line. Across the Huai River, transport is facilitated by a combined rail and highway bridge carrying provincial road S225, as well as a river ferry service operating near the city center.
