Why Huangshi
Huangshi is a prefecture-level city situated in the southeastern part of Hubei province in China. Positioned roughly 100 kilometers southeast of Wuhan along the southwestern bank of the Yangtze River, the city borders Jiangxi province to its south. The territory spans approximately 4,600 square kilometers, characterized primarily by hilly terrain and low mountains, culminating at 7 Summit Mountain at an elevation of 860 meters. Situated in a major lake zone between Dongting Lake and Poyang Lake, the regional landscape includes dozens of large bodies of water.
The history of the area connects to the ancient State of Huang, whose displaced populace settled in Hubei's Jiangxia Prefecture during the Han dynasty. Much later, during World War II in 1944, local industrial facilities including a foundry and floating docks were targeted in aerial bombardments. Huangshi earned the historic moniker "The Southern Cornucopia" due to its abundant mineral deposits, which include copper, iron, gold, and manganese. Over time, these natural resources fostered significant metallurgical, manufacturing, and industrial enterprises.
Visitors to Huangshi can explore a mixture of natural landscapes and cultural heritage sites. Mountainous and aquatic features include Dongfang Mountain, home to a prominent Buddhist temple, alongside scenic waterside locations such as Qingshan Lake, TuanChengShan Park, and Xisaishan, which sits along the Yangtze River and offers views of the surrounding waters and cityscape. Cihu Lake and its surrounding scenery park physically separate the older areas of the city from the newer government development zone.
Reflecting its industrial past, several former manufacturing sites have been transformed into public attractions. The Huangshi National Mining Park, established at the former open pit of the Daye Iron Mine, allows visitors to view a variety of historic and contemporary mining machinery. Additionally, the preserved location of one of China's earliest cement enterprises has been developed into the Huaxin 1907 Cultural Park, highlighting its position on the national architectural heritage list.
Huangshi experiences a sub-temperate climate with an average annual temperature of 17 °C and yearly precipitation of 1,400 millimeters, accompanied by 264 frost-free days and occasional limited snowfall between December and February. As a regional distribution and logistics hub, the area is connected by major expressways, national highways, and two bridges crossing the Yangtze River. Rail transportation is provided by the Wuhan–Jiujiang Railway as well as a dedicated commuter intercity railway network.
