Why Huludao
Huludao is a coastal prefecture-level city situated along the northwestern shore of Liaodong Bay in southwestern Liaoning province, China. Positioned in the Liaoxi Corridor just beyond the Shanhai Pass, the city serves as a historical gateway connecting North China to the northeastern regions of the country. Encompassing a total area of 10,582 square kilometers, the municipality receives its name—which translates to Gourd Island—from the bottle-gourd shape of a local peninsula located within its Longgang District. Previously known as Jinxi, the region was renamed in 1994.
Human settlement in the area dates back to ancient times, with archaeological evidence revealing an advanced Bronze Age culture during the Shang and Zhou dynasties, followed by urban development during the Warring States era. During the Ming dynasty, defensive installations were established, including a section of the Great Wall and the fortified settlement of Xingcheng. In the modern era, Jinxi was formally established as a county in 1906, later witnessing conflicts during the Japanese invasion and the Chinese Civil War before gaining prefecture-level city status in 1989.
Geographically, the city sits on the Bohai Sea coast and experiences a continental monsoon climate within the north temperate zone. Winters are cold and dry, while summers are hot and humid. Year-round average temperatures range between 8.5 and 9.5 °C, accompanied by annual precipitation levels of 550 to 650 millimeters. The surrounding natural landscape features a 237-kilometer coastline, rich marine waters, mineral deposits, offshore oilfields, and fruit orchards such as the expansive Qiansuo orchard in Suizhong county.
Visitors to Huludao can explore a variety of cultural landmarks and coastal destinations. Notable historical sites include the preserved Ming dynasty walled town of Xingcheng, which features ancient temples and traditional architecture, and the ruins of the 2,000-year-old Qin dynasty Jieshi palace. The Great Wall crosses the region at Jiumenkou, where it spans the Daqing River across nine gates, marking it as a unique water-crossing segment of the structure. Leisure travel centers around sandy coastal areas such as Longwan Beach and Xingcheng Beach, regional hot springs, and scenic spots like Juhua Island.
Travelers can reach and navigate the region through established transport networks. Huludao is connected to major rail lines and highways linking Beijing with northern urban centers such as Shenyang and Harbin. High-speed passenger rail services operate from Huludao North Station, providing access to Beijing in approximately three hours. Local transit within the city consists of an extensive public bus network and local taxis, supplemented by regional long-distance buses and trains.
