Why Isle Royale National Park
Isle Royale National Park is an isolated archipelago situated in Lake Superior within the state of Michigan, United States. The park encompasses the primary landmass of Isle Royale, more than 400 adjacent smaller islands, and the surrounding lake waters. Extending 45 miles long and 9 miles wide, Isle Royale ranks as the fifth-largest lake island in the world and the largest natural island in Lake Superior. Formally established as a national park in 1940, the territory gained wilderness area status in 1976, became a UNESCO International Biosphere Reserve in 1980, and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2019 under its native name, the Minong Traditional Cultural Property.
The park's geography features exposed bedrock ridges, interior wetlands, and a mixed forest ecosystem dominated by boreal and northern conifer species. Thin topsoil across the islands supports trees with shallow roots, such as balsam fir, black spruce, and white spruce, along with deciduous varieties including quaking aspen and paper birch. High points like Mount Desor reach 1,394 feet above sea level. Interior bodies of water are scattered across Isle Royale, with Siskiwit Lake being the largest. The park's isolated terrestrial fauna includes iconic populations of wolves and moose, as well as red foxes, snowshoe hares, and beavers.
Human history on the islands spans thousands of years, beginning with Native Americans who traveled by canoe during summer months to hunt, fish, and extract copper from hundreds of hand-dug pits. Modern European-American activity in the nineteenth century brought brief periods of intensive copper mining, logging, and commercial fishing. Following the park's creation, former settlements were cleared and forests regenerated. Historic maritime remnants remain around the archipelago, including several lighthouses—such as those on Passage Island and Rock of Ages—and well-preserved shipwrecks like the SS America, which draw recreational scuba divers to the cold waters.
Isle Royale is a roadless wilderness with no permanent year-round residents. Wheeled vehicles and bicycles are forbidden across the park, though wheeled carts are available at the Rock Harbor marina to transport personal gear to local lodging and cabins. The park experiences a humid continental climate with mild summer temperatures influenced by the cold waters of Lake Superior. Located roughly 15 miles from Minnesota and the Canadian province of Ontario, and 56 miles from Michigan's Upper Peninsula, this secluded island destination is accessible only by boat or seaplane, remaining one of the least-visited units in the national park system.
