Why Jeffersonville

Jeffersonville, locally referred to as Jeff, is the county seat of Clark County in southern Indiana. Situated along the northern banks of the Ohio River along Interstate 65, the city sits directly opposite Louisville, Kentucky, and recorded a population of 49,447 at the 2020 census. The area originally developed around Fort Finney, built in 1786, before being named in honor of Thomas Jefferson around 1801. In 1802, residents established the town using a grid pattern designed by Jefferson himself.

Throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, Jeffersonville played a prominent role in regional industry, wartime logistics, and human rights. Waterfront shipbuilding began in 1819, making steamboat construction a defining element of the local economy. The city also served as a primary crossing point on the Underground Railroad for freedom seekers escaping across the Ohio River. During the Civil War, its position across from Kentucky made it a vital Union staging hub home to Camp Joe Holt and Jefferson General Hospital, which was the nation's third-largest military hospital at the time. The Jeffersonville Quartermaster Depot further supported military supply needs through both World Wars.

Visitors to the city can explore key historic sites and public riverfront amenities. In Warder Park stands the historic Carnegie Library building, an ornate Beaux-Arts structure completed in 1905 featuring a signature copper dome. Linking Jeffersonville directly to Louisville is the Big Four Bridge, a former railway structure converted into a half-mile pedestrian and bicycle crossing. The elevated walkway features a customizable LED lighting system that operates from twilight until late evening.

At the foot of the bridge on the Indiana side lies Big Four Station, a central park and civic plaza. The site features open lawn space, interactive fountains, a children's playground, a pavilion, a bike-sharing terminal, and a weekly Saturday farmers market, providing easy access to surrounding downtown businesses. The city's maritime history is celebrated each September during the annual Steamboat Days festival.
