Why Jiaozuo

Jiaozuo is a prefecture-level city in northwestern Henan Province, China, situated along the northern bank of the Yellow River directly south of the Taihang Mountains. It serves as a regional center along the Shanxi–Henan border and forms part of the Central Plains urban agglomeration. Surrounded by Zhengzhou, Luoyang, Xinxiang, and Jiyuan, the area features gravel slopes across the northern mountain foothills. Jiaozuo experiences a temperate semi-arid climate with four distinct seasons, characterized by cool, dry winters and hot, rainy summers. Shielded by the nearby mountain range, the urban area is generally warmer than neighboring cities.

Human activity in the district dates back more than 8,000 years to the matriarchal commune period. The territory was subsequently governed under numerous imperial dynasties, including the Xia, Shang, Han, and Tang, before growing around rich mineral resources in the modern era. Jiaozuo is also associated with several prominent historical figures, including Jin Dynasty founder Sima Yi, classic writers Han Yu and Li Shangyin, Northern Song painter Guo Xi, and Chen Wangting, who created Chen-style taijiquan.

Within the urban core, travelers can access a variety of cultural and recreational sites. The Jiaozuo Museum holds the largest collection of Han-dynasty grave goods in China, illustrating ancient architectural designs. In the north, the Jiaozuo Film and Television City contains replica early Chinese structures utilized as filming sets for works like Three Kingdoms. Longyuan Lake Park provides open space in the city center alongside a 238-meter television tower and the Kuafu Chasing the Sun sculpture. Nearby, Fengshanzhen features a mountaintop needle sculpture set within a former quarry that was converted into a public mining park.

Across the wider administrative region, visitors can explore notable natural scenery and ancient architecture. Yuntai Mountain is a prominent regional attraction featuring cliffside walkways, a twin-opening waterfall, and a 314-meter waterfall drop. Historical sites include the Sansheng Pagoda at Tianning Temple, a 13-story multi-eaved brick structure dating back to 1171 during the Jin dynasty. The region is also recognized for producing traditional medicinal herbs known as the Four Great Huai Medicines, which comprise Chinese yam, chrysanthemum, achyranthes, and rehmannia. Jiaozuo is accessible via the Jiaozuo and Jiaozuo West railway stations, as well as an interconnected network of local and national expressways.
