Why Jiaxing

Jiaxing is a prefecture-level city situated along the Grand Canal in northern Zhejiang Province, China. It is positioned between Hangzhou to the southwest, Huzhou to the west, Shanghai to the northeast, and Jiangsu Province to the north. The area's settlement history extends back 7,000 years to the Neolithic Majiabang Culture, when early residents practiced farming, animal husbandry, fishing, and hunting. Over the centuries, the locality was known by names such as Zuili, Youquan, and Hexing before taking the name Jiaxing in the third century.

Within the city center, historic points of interest include South Lake, situated southeast of the original walled district. The location is recognized as the founding site of the Chinese Communist Party, which was officially established on a boat in the lake in 1921. The city center also contains fragmented remnants of the ancient Zicheng citadel, featuring a main gate that was rebuilt in 1990, alongside historic writers' residences, a Carmelite abbey, and a Gothic abbey church constructed in 1902. Near the city moat and waterways, the restored neighborhoods of Meiwan Street and Yuehe Street present traditional architecture and gardens; Meiwan Street hosts Kim Koo's historic refuge and a Qian family shrine, while Yuehe Street features artisan workshops and street food vendors.

Beyond the central urban area, Jiaxing encompasses the preserved canal townships of Wuzhen and Xitang, which showcase historic homes alongside small waterways and serve as popular filming sites. In the southern outskirts, the Zongzi Cultural Ecological Preservation Area protects the traditional heritage and production techniques of local rice foods. The local culture includes active Buddhist, Taoist, Catholic, and Protestant communities, with landmark Roman Catholic sites such as the Jiaxing Catholic Church and the Jiaxing Vincent Abbey.

Jiaxing is a notable producer of silk, textiles, woolens, and exported leather goods, supported by chemical, mechanical, and high-tech electronic sectors, as well as the Qinshan and Fangjiashan nuclear power facilities. Travelers reach the city through Jiaxing railway station on the Shanghai–Kunming line or the high-speed Jiaxing South station, complemented by long-distance bus terminals, Jiaxing Nanhu Airport, National Highway 320, and major routes such as the G60 and G92 expressways.
