Why Jieyang

Jieyang is a historic prefecture-level city situated in the Chaoshan region of eastern Guangdong Province, China. Positioned along the coast, it looks out to the South China Sea to the south and shares borders with Shantou, Chaozhou, Meizhou, and Shanwei. Widely recognized as a foundational cradle of Chaoshan culture, the city also serves as an important ancestral hometown for large overseas Chinese communities living throughout Southeast Asia.

Human settlement in the region spans thousands of years, as highlighted by the late Neolithic Hutoupu culture in Puning, which contains the earliest and largest ancient pottery kiln complex discovered in Guangdong. The city's formal administration dates back to 214 BC, when a military garrison was established during the Qin Dynasty on the sunny, southern side of Mount Jie, giving the locality its name. Known historically as an ancient city of eastern Guangdong, it has functioned as a key regional hub across numerous dynasties.

The local culture is deeply tied to its distinct speech varieties. Chaoshan Min is predominantly spoken, with the local Rongjiang sub-dialect preserving archaic linguistic traits such as eight classical tones and final stop consonants. A notable Hakka-speaking population also inhabits the city's northwestern borders and mid-hill districts. Centuries of sociocultural exchange between these communities have led to unique regional variations, including a local dialect known as half-mountain Hakka.

In addition to its cultural heritage, Jieyang is a major industrial and agricultural hub. Traditional production encompasses hardware, stainless steel, garments, and shoemaking, while Puning operates as a major national trade center for Chinese herbal medicine and wholesale clothing supported by e-commerce. Local agriculture yields specialty crops including lychees, tea, and preserved fruits. Modern industrial initiatives in the region include the Huilai Da Nanhai Petrochemical Industrial Zone and offshore wind energy facilities.

Visitors to Jieyang can explore a range of notable heritage sites and leisure spots. Prominent national historic sites include the Jieyang Confucius Temple, founded in 1140 during the Southern Song Dynasty, and the Ming Dynasty Jieyang Guandi Temple, erected in 1558. Additional highlights include the Former Residence of Ding Richang, Jieyang Tower, and Jieyang Rongjiang West Lake. Transport to and around the area is facilitated by the Guangzhou–Meizhou–Shantou Railway, as well as the Jieyang Chaoshan International Airport, which ranks as Guangdong Province's third-largest airport.
