Jim Thompson House 🇹🇭

The Jim Thompson House is a museum situated in central Bangkok, Thailand, dedicated to exhibiting the art collection of James Harrison Wilson Thompson, an American architect and businessman. Constructed in 1959, the property encompasses a rectangular plot measuring roughly half an acre, or just over 2,000 square meters. Following his move to Bangkok and the founding of the Thai Silk Company Ltd. in 1948, Thompson amassed a broad array of Southeast Asian artworks, a region whose artistic traditions were largely unfamiliar to Western audiences during that era.

Thompson gathered historical Buddhist sculptures as well as traditional Thai paintings executed on wood, fabric, and paper. These artistic works frequently depicted the life of the Buddha and stories from the Vessantara Jataka. Driven by an interest in subtle craftsmanship, his collecting expanded beyond Thailand to include non-religious art from Burma, Cambodia, and Laos, which he acquired during frequent regional trips. The museum also contains 16th- and 17th-century Chinese blue-and-white porcelain that had originally arrived in Thailand centuries ago.

To showcase his collection and serve as his personal residence, Thompson began designing a complex in 1958. The property features six traditional wooden Thai-style dwellings alongside several older structures gathered from various parts of Thailand throughout the 1950s and 1960s. Most of these 19th-century buildings were taken apart and relocated from Ayutthaya, whereas the primary structure—a former weaver's home converted into a living area—was brought from Bangkrua.

The complex rests along the Saen Saep canal, positioned directly across the water from Bangkrua, where the weavers for Thompson's silk enterprise were originally based. Following Thompson's disappearance in Malaysia in 1967, management of the site transitioned to The James H. W. Thompson Foundation, operating under the royal patronage of Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn.

Located at 6 Soi Kasemsan 2 on Rama 1 Road within the Pathumwan district, the venue is situated one block from the Bangkok National Stadium. Visitors exploring the site can attend guided tours of the residence and its surrounding art exhibits.
