Lumphini Park 🇹🇭

Lumphini Park is a 142-acre (57.6-hectare) green space situated in the central business district of Bangkok, Thailand, within the Lumphini sub-district. Positioned on the northern side of Rama IV Road, the grounds are bounded by Witthayu Road to the east, Rama IV Road to the south, and Ratchadamri Road to the west. The area offers a rare open public landscape of trees, gardens, lakes, and animals in the capital. Recognized as the first public park established in Thailand, it also served as the origin of the Lumpinee Boxing Stadium.

Originally a private plot named Thung Sala Daeng belonging to King Rama VI, the land was donated in 1925 to host the Siamrat Phiphitthaphan Trade Fair. Following the event, the monarch willed the property to become a public park, naming it after Lumbini, the Buddha's birthplace in Nepal. Although construction continued past the king's death, the park was eventually completed and later served as a Japanese Army camp during World War II. A statue honoring King Rama VI was erected at the entrance in 1942. The grounds have also functioned as a site for right-wing political rallies, including protests in 2006 and between 2013 and 2014.

Within the park, visitors can navigate an artificial lake featuring rental swan paddle boats. Notable structures include a Chinese-style clock tower built in 1925, the country's first public library, a public aquarium, a swimming pool, sports fields, and children's play areas. Specialized facilities on site include the Smiling Sun Ground for visitors with disabilities, the Bangkok Elder Citizens Club, the Home of Hope refuge for youth, the BMA Apprentice School, and the Lumphini Youth Center. The natural environment supports over 30 bird species alongside a population of around 400 Asian water monitors.

Recreational amenities feature a 2.5-kilometer circuit popular among morning and evening joggers. Scheduled programs include annual bird-watching instruction, monthly Buddhist Dharma gatherings on the final Sunday of each month, and Sunday music festivals from January through April. During the winter season, the Palm Garden hosts the annual Concert in the Park, presenting performances by the Bangkok Symphony Orchestra. On-site dining options include the Sri Thai Derm Food Center, with plans for a new hawker center along Ratchadamri Road scheduled for early 2026.

Strict park regulations prohibit smoking as well as dogs, with an exception for certified guide dogs, while cycling is restricted to the hours between 10:00 am and 3:00 pm. The grounds are accessible via public transit, served by Lumphini station on the MRT Blue Line and both Si Lom station and Sala Daeng BTS station nearby. In addition, the 1.3-kilometer elevated Green Bridge connects Lumphini Park from Sarasin Junction to neighboring Benjakitti Park.
