Why Jingdezhen

Jingdezhen is a prefecture-level city situated in the northeastern portion of Jiangxi province in eastern China, bordering Anhui province to the north. Covering an area of 5,256 square kilometers, the city center lies in the northeastern section of the Poyang Lake Plain. Its terrain ranges from flat southern plains with an average altitude of 200 meters to an elevated peak reaching 1,618 meters. The surrounding countryside holds abundant natural deposits of manganese, coal, lime, and kaolin, a specialized clay utilized alongside local pottery stone to produce hard-paste ceramics.

Renowned as the Porcelain Capital, Jingdezhen possesses a documented history extending over 2,000 years. Porcelain craftsmanship began during the Han dynasty when the area was called Xinping. Originally established as Changnan along the Chang River, the town was renamed Jingdezhen in 1004 under Emperor Zhenzong of the Song dynasty. It subsequently developed into the largest center for Chinese porcelain manufacturing, with official imperial kilns operating in the urban center at Pearl Hill (Zhushan) and additional kilns at Hutian. Key historic ceramics created here include Song and Yuan dynasty Qingbai ware, blue and white porcelain, and Qing dynasty famille rose styles. UNESCO designated the region's porcelain industry sites as a World Heritage Site in 2026. Its ceramic tradition and affordable living conditions continue to draw young creative individuals, locally termed Jingpiao, from across the country.

The broader city region encompasses Zhushan District, Changjiang District, Fuliang County, and the county-level city of Leping. Outside the central urban districts, Fuliang County is recognized for its large-scale tea plantations, while Leping serves as a major regional vegetable production and agricultural hub.

Jingdezhen is accessible through air, rail, and highway networks. Jingdezhen Luojia Airport, positioned approximately eight kilometers from the downtown core, provides domestic flights to various major Chinese destinations. Railway access is supported by the Anhui–Jiangxi Railway alongside the Jiujiang–Jingdezhen–Quzhou Railway line. National expressways and highways, including the G35, G56, and G206, connect the city by road. Local transportation across the area is serviced by taxis and a network of public bus routes.

The regional climate is humid subtropical and influenced by the East Asian monsoon, resulting in long, hot, humid summers and cool winters. Spring is predominantly cloudy and wet, with monthly rainfall regularly exceeding 190 millimeters between March and July. Summer brings the highest proportion of annual sunshine, whereas autumn brings warm to mild weather with comparatively dry conditions.
