Why Jiujiang
Jiujiang is a major prefecture-level city situated along the southern bank of the Yangtze River in northwestern Jiangxi Province, China. Positioned adjacent to Poyang Lake, China's largest freshwater lake, it serves as the province's second-largest city and its sole international trade port. Renowned for its strategic riverside location and historic water routes, the municipality includes an urban core formed by the Xunyang, Lianxi, and Chaisang districts, alongside numerous surrounding counties and county-level cities.
Historically known by former names such as Jiangzhou and Xunyang, Jiujiang boasts a rich cultural heritage associated with several celebrated historical figures. The ancient poet Tao Yuanming lived at the foot of nearby Mount Lu and authored famous literary works in the area, while the poets Li Bai and Bai Juyi both spent periods of exile in the town. Additionally, the Confucian philosopher Zhu Xi practiced at the White Deer Grotto Academy on the slopes of Mount Lu. Over the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, Jiujiang developed into a significant foreign trade harbor and a major center for the tea trade before evolving into a modern industrial and commercial hub.
The foremost destination for visitors to the region is Mount Lu, located just south of the urban center. Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a Global Geopark, Mount Lu is celebrated for its striking landscape composed of sharp peaks, steep cliffs, waterfalls, and lakes, as well as historic Buddhist and Taoist temples. Perched on the mountain is Kuling, a historic resort settlement originally built to take advantage of the mountain's refreshing summer climate and scenic views. Travelers can also take in the waterscape along the Yangtze River and nearby Poyang Lake.
Jiujiang features a humid subtropical climate. The city is easily reachable via a well-established transportation network that includes Jiujiang Lushan Airport, numerous national expressways, and several regional and high-speed railway systems. Crossing points over the Yangtze River are provided by major bridges, while the local river port operates across five specialized dock sections.
