Kafir-kala 🇺🇿

Located 12 kilometers south of Samarkand's city center beside the Dargom river, Kafir-kala is an ancient fortress that once protected the southern border of the Samarkand oasis. You can explore the ruins of this central mudbrick citadel, which measures 75 by 75 meters at its base and originally featured six towers along with a surrounding moat that remains visible today.

First occupied in the 4th-5th century CE by the Kidarites, this compelling site offers you a direct window into the regional transition from Sogdian to Islamic rule. Among its most remarkable discoveries is a charred 6th-century wooden throne room gate, preserved through partial carbonization during the 712 CE Islamic conquest.

This gate displays elaborate low-relief carvings of worshippers in noble Hephthalite-style knee-length tunics and shoulder ribbons adoring the goddess Nana on her lion throne. As you uncover the history of Kafir-kala, you will learn about fascinating artifacts excavated from the area, including a cross-shaped Zoroastrian ossuary from the 6th-7th century CE, ancient pottery, coinage, and numerous decorative seals—including one belonging to the "king of the Oghlar Huns."
