Why Kaifeng
Kaifeng is a prefecture-level city located in east-central Henan Province, along the southern bank of the Yellow River in China. Recognised as one of the country's Eight Ancient Capitals, the city spans five urban districts—Longting, Shunhe Hui, Gulou, Yuwangtai, and Xiangfu—alongside four surrounding counties. It borders several municipal regions, including the provincial capital of Zhengzhou to the west and Shandong's Heze to the northeast. Beyond its historic significance, Kaifeng serves as a regional center for scientific research and education, housing a campus of Henan University.
The city's past reaches back to antiquity, taking on various names across centuries such as Daliang, Bianzhou, and Dongjing. During the Northern Song Dynasty, Kaifeng reached its historic apex as the imperial capital. At its 11th-century peak, it functioned as a vital commercial hub situated at the junction of major canal routes, surrounded by concentric city walls and hosting a large population. Over the centuries, the city withstood repeated military conflicts and destructive Yellow River floods, leading to several reconstructions, including a major mid-19th-century rebuilding that shaped its modern layout.
Visitors to Kaifeng can explore architectural relics surviving from its imperial era. The 54.7-meter Iron Pagoda of Youguo Temple, constructed in 1049, stands as the city's oldest landmark, alongside the partially preserved Po Pagoda dating from 974. Another notable historical site is the Daxiangguo Temple, originally built in 555. Kaifeng is also celebrated for its unique heritage, including vibrant night markets along thoroughfares reminiscent of its imperial past, as well as being the historic home of China's oldest documented Jewish community.
Kaifeng experiences a monsoon-influenced humid subtropical climate marked by four distinct seasons. Summers are hot and humid, while winters are cool and mostly dry; autumn brings crisp weather, with most rainfall concentrated between June and September. The city is connected via Kaifeng railway station on the Longhai Railway mainline and through intercity rail services to Zhengzhou. Travelers arriving by air typically utilize Zhengzhou Xinzheng International Airport, located roughly 55 kilometers from downtown Kaifeng.
