Why Kani
Kani is a city situated in the south-central portion of Gifu Prefecture, Japan. Set within the scenic Kani basin, the municipality lies approximately 30 kilometers from both Gifu City and Nagoya. The Kiso River flows across the northern section of the territory, facing flat terrain that extends toward the Ota Basin on the opposite bank, while the eastern district transitions into rolling hills. Notably, golf courses occupy nearly ten percent of the city's total area of roughly 87.57 square kilometers.
Historically, the surrounding territory formed part of ancient Mino Province. During the Edo period, governance was divided between the Owari Domain and direct shogunate control. The area served as a transit corridor along the famous Nakasendō highway connecting Edo and Kyoto, housing multiple post stations. Following modern municipal reorganization, the town of Imawatari was established in 1889, eventually merging with neighboring villages in 1955 to form Kani. The community officially achieved city status in 1982 and later expanded by incorporating the town of Kaneyama in 2005.
In recent decades, Kani experienced rapid growth as a bedroom community serving the nearby urban centers of Nagoya and Gifu, though its population has stabilized in recent years. The local industrial economy is heavily centered around the manufacturing of automobile parts. The city also hosts higher educational institutions, including campuses for Meijo University and the Gifu University of Medical Science, as well as the Sociedade Educacional Brazilian School.
Travelers can reach Kani using extensive rail and highway connections. Railway services are operated via the JR Central Taita Line, serving stations such as Kani and Shimogiri, and the Meitetsu Hiromi Line, which stops at Shin Kani, Nishi Kani, Kanigawa, Nihonrain-imawatari, and Akechi. Road transportation is facilitated by National Routes 21, 41, and 248, providing access from neighboring areas like Inuyama, Tajimi, and Minokamo.
The regional weather features hot, humid summers and mild winters, with an average annual temperature of 15.0 degrees Celsius. Temperatures reach their peak in August, averaging around 27.6 degrees Celsius, while January is the coolest month, averaging 3.2 degrees Celsius. Precipitation averages 1,984 millimeters annually, with September recording the heaviest rainfall.
