Why Kent
Kent is a city in Portage County in Northeast Ohio, situated along the Cuyahoga River on the western side of the county. Positioned within the Akron metropolitan region, it is well known as the home of Kent State University and carries the official nickname "The Tree City." The community blends a college-town atmosphere with a rich industrial history.
Originally settled by European immigrants in 1805 and earlier inhabited by Native American groups, the area was initially known as Franklin Mills. Early growth was driven by water-powered gristmills and factories along the river, further accelerated in the 1830s by the construction of the Pennsylvania and Ohio Canal. In the 1860s, local businessman Marvin Kent successfully promoted the community as a major maintenance hub for the Atlantic and Great Western Railroad, leading to the town being renamed in his honor. John Davey founded the Davey Tree Expert Company here in 1909, cementing the city's arboreal identity, while Kent State University was established in 1910.
Education forms the centerpiece of the local economy and culture, anchored by the expansive campus of Kent State University. Visitors can explore the historic downtown, which features preserved canal structures, original mill sites, and vibrant commercial areas like Acorn Alley. A key historical site is Heritage Park, created around a 1836 arch dam and canal lock along the Cuyahoga River. Another point of interest is Brady's Leap, a park marking the location of a famous 1780 escape over the river by Captain Samuel Brady. The city is also widely recognized for its connection to the May 4, 1970 Kent State shootings, a event memorialized on the university grounds, which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Kent features nearly 20 local parks and outdoor public spaces, offering strong connections to regional recreation via public hike-and-bike trails. Throughout the year, the community hosts regular gatherings, including Earth Day events, folk music festivals, and Independence Day celebrations. Local transit is supported by a comprehensive public bus system, while regional transport routes link the city to nearby urban hubs.
