Erected in 1906–07 by Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III as a gift to the city municipality to mark his silver jubilee, this historical site carries deep royal roots and was named after his predecessor and adoptive father, Khanderao Gaekwad. Designed in the Indo-Saracenic architectural style by English architect Robert Chisholm, the complex offers a fascinating blending of cultural influences.

As you wander through, you will admire a main gate inspired by Dabhoi Fort, arches influenced by Islamic design, domes reminiscent of Hindu temples, and intricate perforated stone screens similar to those found in Agra. Constructed from brick and mortar clad with Dhrangdhra stones, the two-storey structure features an 86-foot central dome and a sprawling open courtyard. Inside, you will find the working offices of the Vadodara Municipal Corporation alongside 192 vibrant shops occupying the side stalls.

Head out to the back garden area to experience lively markets packed with fresh vegetables and colorful flowers. Do not miss the courtyard statue of Khanderao, sculpted by Vinayak Pandurang Karmarkar and unveiled in 1935.
