Why Killeen
Killeen is a prominent city situated in western Bell County, Texas, located 68 miles north of Austin and 125 miles from both Dallas and San Antonio. Covering a total area of 54.2 square miles, the city is bordered to the north by Fort Hood and to the east by Harker Heights. It lies 16 miles west of Belton, which offers the nearest access to Interstate 35. The area features a humid subtropical climate, with recorded temperature extremes ranging from below zero to over 110 degrees Fahrenheit.
The community began in 1881 when the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway purchased land near the farming settlement of Palo Alto and laid out a town site. Named for Frank P. Killeen, an assistant general manager for the railroad, the town grew into an important shipping center for cotton, wool, and grain. Killeen transformed dramatically in 1942 with the creation of Camp Hood, a military post later designated as Fort Hood in 1950. The sprawling facility absorbed much of the surrounding farmland, shifting the local economy from agriculture to supporting the military base. This transition sparked rapid population growth and established the city as a dynamic military center whose economic vitality remains directly connected to the post and its stationed personnel.
Higher education in Killeen is provided by Central Texas College, founded in 1965, and Texas A&M University-Central Texas, which offers bachelor's and master's degrees. The city is served by the Killeen Independent School District, the largest school system in the area between Round Rock and Dallas. Cultural and civic life is supported by local public library facilities, radio and television stations, and long-standing newspapers such as the Killeen Daily Herald.
Retail commerce is centered around the Killeen Mall, which functions as the city's primary shopping facility and is one of two regional malls in Bell County. Transportation within and beyond the area relies on local roadways connecting to neighboring towns and Interstate 35, along with air service options linked to a municipal airport built during the city's twentieth-century expansion.
