Why Kings Canyon National Park
Kings Canyon National Park is located in California's southern Sierra Nevada, within Fresno and Tulare Counties. Bordering Sequoia National Park to the south, the reserve is jointly managed alongside its neighbor. Originally established in 1890 as General Grant National Park before being significantly expanded and renamed in 1940, the park covers 461,901 acres, the vast majority of which is protected wilderness. It is known for its dramatic glacier-carved valley exceeding a mile in depth, high mountain peaks, fast-flowing rivers, and stands of giant sequoia trees.
The park is geographically split into two main areas. The smaller western section centers around Grant Grove, containing key visitor facilities and sequoia forests, including the General Grant tree, which is the second-largest tree in the world by trunk volume. The far larger eastern section comprises ruggged mountain wilderness carved by the Middle and South Forks of the Kings River. Cedar Grove, positioned on the floor of Kings Canyon, represents the only area in this eastern portion accessible by vehicle, reached via Highway 180. To the east along the Sierra Crest, steep subranges like the Palisades reach heights over 14,000 feet, culminating at North Palisade, the park's highest peak.
Glacial activity sculpted the high terrain during past Ice Ages, forming U-shaped valleys, sheer granite cliffs, alpine tarns, and large features such as Tehipite Dome. The park feeds major river systems, with the South and Middle Forks of the Kings River descending thousands of feet from the alpine crest. Notable water features near Cedar Grove include Mist Falls, Roaring River Falls, and Grizzly Falls, while underground subterranean formations like Boyden Cave lie along the South Fork.
Due to minimal road infrastructure, most of Kings Canyon is preserved for backcountry exploration via foot and horse trails. The combined Pacific Crest and John Muir Trails run through the entire length of the park from north to south. Climate conditions vary considerably by elevation; heavy winter snowpack covers the high country for much of the year. Following rapid snowmelt in May and June, high-altitude trails generally become snow-free and accessible from late June through late October.
