Why Lafayette
Lafayette is a major city in southern Louisiana, serving as the seat of Lafayette Parish and a key hub within the Acadiana region. Commonly known as "The Hub City" and the "Heart of Acadiana," it is situated along the Vermilion River on the western rim of the Atchafalaya Basin. Positioned on the elevated southwestern Louisiana Prairie Terrace, the city sits higher than the wetlands to its south and west. Local waterways, including natural drainage channels such as Isaac Verot Coulee and Coulee Ile des Cannes, flow into the river. Lafayette lies approximately 59 miles from Baton Rouge and 135 miles from New Orleans.
Prior to European colonization, the area was inhabited by the Attakapa people. French colonists later established a riverfront trading post called Petit Manchac. In the mid-to-late eighteenth century, Acadian refugees settled in the region following their expulsion from Canada, intermarrying with other residents and developing Cajun culture centered on the French language and Roman Catholic faith. Formally established as Vermilionville in the 1820s and incorporated in 1836, the town was renamed Lafayette in 1884 in honor of the Marquis de Lafayette. Initially driven by plantation agriculture, the economy shifted significantly after oil was discovered in the 1940s, developing into a prominent center for energy, technology, healthcare, aerospace, banking, and retail.
Visitors to Lafayette experience a distinct cultural heritage rooted in both Cajun and Louisiana Creole traditions. Downtown Lafayette features historic architecture, with several structures listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Key sights include Old Lafayette City Hall and the Cathedral of Saint John the Evangelist, which serves as the seat for the local Roman Catholic diocese. Additional historic landmarks throughout the area include the Alexandre Mouton House, Brandt House, Charles H. Mouton House, Daigle House, Holy Rosary Institute, and Hope Lodge No. 145. The city also hosts the long-running Festivals Acadiens et Créoles.
Lafayette functions as a major regional educational center, anchored by the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, which originally opened as the Southwestern Louisiana Industrial Institute after being established in 1898. Other local institutions of higher learning include South Louisiana Community College and Remington College. The city features a humid subtropical climate, characterized by hot, moist summers and warm, damp winters, with rainfall occurring year-round and peaking during the summer months.
